Good point about generations. I dated a Greek-American boy in college years ago, His second-gen parents spoke Greek, but my friend could only understand a bit from hearing them talk to his grandparents, and pronounce words correctly, without fluency at all. It's a pattern, apparently.

MOXIE was an acquired taste kind of drink and if you never had any in your life you would probably wouldn't enjoy it......I had my first one in the 1940's on a 90 degree day from the Coke cooler that was loaded with big chunks of ice.......It was so refreshing that I would buy a few bottles and keep them in the fridge.......

Unable to travel with a baby they left me in Maine 5 years. 1960 I was picked up and brought out to Santa Monica, California where I've been off and on since. Today I walk on ANNENBERG BEACH RESORT daily in Santa Monica and remember those years leaving Maine, returning to Maine and thinking about my home State of Maine. In many fond ways. Picking Fiddleheads. Fly-fishing. Traveling around the State to Moosehead, Sanford Lake, Maine to visit fellow US Army Veterans. My friend Mark Carter taught me a lot about our Maine. In 1968 at age 14 I returned to live with grandparents, and it was memorable. Got into some trouble and left again. US Army 1972 followed. NATO HQs working for General Al Haig. And the rest is history. I worked for Corporate America in 9 countries after graduating from UCLA, Woodbury University in International business. Totally legit! When we moved downeast from the Sierras I always wondered why I was the flatlander coming down from 3000ft to Blue Hill which is, what? 500ft? Down to Sedgwick we got those bonus words and phrases - cunnin, dow, out straight, stove up, picked ovah, smarter'n a smacked bottom, car art, fetched up, and hauled out (went up to Bangor to get my wisdom teeth hauled out). Met my first co-worker and she introduced herself, "I'm Lanna." I said, "Hi Lanna." She said, "no it's Lanna - like the cookie" (Lorna Doon). I said "aw, Lorna!" Then, a few weeks later, my friend took me up to Bangor to meet his friend, Aniter from Brewah and I knew this language thing was gonna be fun.

My ex wife had an aunt that lived in Maine... She came down to visit once and we went out to hit all the garage sales in our area. She said they didn't call them garage sales in Maine... I expected her to say "Yahd Sale." Nope... "Lawn Sale." But that one syllable in 'lawn' was pretty stretched out.

I’m in Rhode Island, but spent many summers in Waldoboro, ME! I remember locals saying “Oh showa!” (Yes or I agree) I miss Maine so much… lots of cherished memories.

As a retired Maine teacher I can tell you this is misleading, most of our schools have become terrible; that is why my grandchildren are in private schools because the public schools are now completely unacceptable. Unless you live in a wealthy suburb or township (roughly 5 of them in the state but these are the exception), your child is not going to get the education they need to be successful in life.
